In this contract CLS sports constructed an artificial turf sport pitch at Penrice Academy, St Austell in Cornwall. Good logistics and site management was key to the success of this project as the site was over 420 miles from the CLS Sports head office in Guisborough.
This scheme was constructed on an existing sports pitch, on the site was a 'redgra' playing area measuring 89.10m x 52.10m. Access to the site was heavily managed as it was a working school site with a restricted narrow entrance off an extremely busy main road. All access was time restricted and also overseen by a CLS Sports banksman at all times.
Once the site had been set up the first task was to remove the existing 'redgra' playing surface followed by the removal of the 'make up' of the sub base allowing CLS Sports to submit their final design proposals to the client, which upon agreement allowed work to commence.
To achieve the designed levels a granular stone was imported onto the site and laid accurately using a Laser-Grader. The Laser-Grader can accurately grade fine stone to an accuracy of 3mm over a full size pitch. Now that a compacted stone base was installed a specialist performance control shockpad was laid prior to laying the synthetic grass pitch.
To reduce the amount of line maintenance this carpet had the main sports line woven into it. However this still left CLS Sports to paint additional lines onto the carpet using their laser guide lining machine.
As with most synthetic sports pitches, fencing formed part of the project, this was also installed by CLS Sports. A recess for the storage of the free standing sports equipment was incorporated into the design. As part of the project CLS Sports also supplied and installed all of the freestanding sports equipment.
