The CLS Sports team can advise and carry out a wide range of maintenance and renovation tasks on both natural and synthetic sports surfaces.
Natural sports surface renovation and maintenance
Many existing natural sports pitches have deteriorated during years of use with little or no maintenance programme in place. Often, the areas started out as a 'grass field' and therefore the old grass sward is now unable to support regular use and recover from the effects of play.
Any natural sports turf surface will require regular maintenance and renovation to ensure that the playing surface stays in the best playable state. We believe that the correct renovation programme is just as important as the construction itself, ensuring that the playing surface remains in the best possible condition at all times. A relatively small initial outlay at the end of playing season can help breathe new life and extend the longevity of a natural sports pitch.
Poor drainage, water-logging and compaction are usually a problem for surfaces which have received little or no maintenance. This will usually lead to poor grass coverage & large wear areas, weed infestation and restricted use during the winter months. During summer months these areas often become hard with the surface becoming cracked, bare and difficult to play on.
Choosing the right renovation programme is of paramount importance to ensure that your playing surface is brought back to its optimal condition and ready for the challenges of the new season and should be planned along with a thorough maintenance regime.
The services we offer include:
Surface renovation: Using a KORO Field Top Maker
Often the best way to ensure playing surface improvement involves removing the playing surface. This operation is one that should be carried out to football and rugby pitches at the end of a season as part of an annual renovation regime. CLS Sports use the KORO Field Top Maker.
Koro Field Top Maker
The Koro FieldTopMaker (FTM) 2000 is a heavy-duty fraise mower, for removing unwanted surface matter such as poa annua, thatch, weeds or the entire surface to a depth of 50mm. It has a side arm conveyor to remove debris directly into a trailer or truckster. The Koro FieldTopMaker 2000 is designed for sports turf applications like football & rugby pitches golf fairways, turf farms, etc. An easily fitted scarifying rotor allows the Topmaker to be used as a heavy-duty scarifier with 3mm tipped blades and optional mid-mounted roller.
Direct seed drilling: Using a Väderstad Rapid
It is universally recognised that over-seeding a sports pitch is part of any annual maintenance regime. CLS Sports have the knowledge and experience to guide you in the right choice of seed not only for your sport but the growing conditions. We will only overseed in the right conditions at the right time of year to aid the seed in germination. CLS Sports carry out the overseeding operation using the Väderstad Rapid ensures an uniform distribution of seed and maximising seed to soil contact. This will result in a playing surface with an improved appearance and ultimately greater playability.
A specialist sports turf Väderstad Rapid is fantastic in all situations and all soil conditions. The Väderstad Rapid will direct drill the seed into a cultivated or non-cultivated surface, it makes no difference. Rapid can drill in all conditions at high speed. You save on the number of passes needed before drilling. The high coulter pressure gives good penetration ability and very good results for direct drilling.
The metering system on Rapid is simple yet ingenious, and gives precise metering of seed, regardless of driving speed. It is easy to set and calibrate.
The large drive wheel follows the soil surface and drives the gearbox. Distribution can be set stepless. In each seed house a cell wheel provides continuous flow of seed to the seed coulters. In order to improve the precision when drilling small seeds a fine cell wheel can be used
Deep Aeration: 'Verti Draining'
'Verti draining' is the industry standard method of aeration for all types of natural sports pitches. The aeration of the soil is vital to encourage a good and healthy sward. The benefits of this process include better air exchange, increased infiltration, stimulated root growth At CLS sports we use the Weidemann 'verti-drain' machine. This machine uses hardened steel tines to penetrate the soil which are can be either solid or hollow. The choose of tine is dependent on numerous factors including; the time of year, the soil conditions. Undertaking this operation twice a year will de-compact the soil providing a surface pan shatter, allowing water and air to disperse to the grass roots more efficiently.
The application of a top dressing is an essential operation that should be carried out at least annually. Top dressing application aids drainage, fills surface irregularities and helps to promote good sward growth. CLS Sports have invested in two different types of machine that will accurately apply top dressing to your sports pitch.
The Raycam Speedresser 24 H
The Raycam Speedresser 24 H is a 2.4m wide drop-spreader designed to handle all topdressing material. The 4 flotation tyres minimise the risk of turf damage & compaction. Ideal for golf courses & sports fields use, both with private clubs, local authorities and contractors. The Speedresser 24 H requires a tractor of at least 75hp, and is PTO driven, via a heavy-duty transmission to an agitator and twin rollers. The twin rollers are not hydraulically adjustable against a pre -set stop to alter spreading rate applications. The high work rate enables the spreading of top dressings up to depths of 2mm - 75mm in one pass.
Dakota - 440 Towed
The Dakota 440 is a large capacity, highly versatile top-dresser & material handler. It will handle both wet and dry material allowing light to heavy dressing and can be loaded with a 1.8m wide tractor bucket. It features accurate and easy to operate calibration with no manual adjustment, all from the vehicle mounted control panel. The 440 has 4 x 20" Supa Trac turf tyres on independent floating beam axles, large capacity hopper, front mounted side conveyor & spreading width up to 13m wide via the dual spinner discharge system.
Synthetic sports surface renovation and maintenance
CLS sports carry out maintenance work to the full range of synthetic sports and play surfaces from full size synthetic turf sports pitches and cricket wickets to macadam MUGAS and tennis courts, and polymeric sport and play surfaces. Following a maintenance schedule is essential to prolong the life of an artificial surface. This maintenance will assist in the maximisation of the investment in the artificial playing surface. More importantly regular maintenance will ensure the safety of the playing surface and retain its quality and appearance.
CLS Sports work closely with a wide variety of manufactures thus providing the most up to date & and more importantly in today economic climate 'cost effective' maintenance regimes.
