Founded in 1968 by Frank Miller and Mike Scaife, Cleveland Land Services was initially formed to offer a rotary cultivator service for domestic customers in Redcar and Cleveland.
Building on their humble beginnings, in the 1970’s Frank and Mike decided to extend their services and began taking on reclamation contracts for local councils across the North East. They invested in larger machines and employed around 10 skilled machine drivers; some of whom are still with us today. In 1978 Cleveland Land Services (Guisborough) was registered as a limited company and using the specialist skills obtained within the first 10 years of trading, CLS began to take on Landscaping, Civil Engineering and Play Area construction projects.
Throughout the company’s early success, it retained a family ethos with John Miller working alongside his father, Frank, and later being appointed Managing Director in 1995.
In 1996 as the company continued its steady growth, consistently improving its skill set, technical ability and resources, the business began constructing natural and synthetic turf sports pitches.
In 2007 after sustained expansion of the company’s fleet; plant and machinery hire division CLS Selfdrive was formed. Originally focusing on tractor, trailer and forklift hire to the industrial and agricultural markets, CLS Selfdrive soon expanded its range to include horticultural equipment, groundcare equipment and heavy earth moving plant on both an operated and self-drive basis.
At the same time, due to CLS’ constant focus on providing a high-quality service, their reputation in the sports field construction industry began to grow considerably and their services were demanded nationwide by a wide array of clients.
In 2010, Cleveland Land Services split their existing contracting and construction operations into two divisions - CLS Sports focusing primarily on natural and synthetic sports pitch construction, and CLS Landscape and Earthworks, focusing on hard and soft landscaping, bulk earthworks and civil engineering. This established the three divisions we have today; CLS Landscape and Earthworks, CLS Sports and CLS Selfdrive.
The Company now operates nationwide from 3 depots across the country and employs over 100 personnel.
Even with the company’s growth the original ethos still remains centred around its family origins. Frank Miller’s wife Coleen chairs the business along with John Miller, Managing Director and Brian Dunn, Director of Operations. John’s three sons also play integral roles within the company. Stephen Miller, Contracts Director; Andrew Miller, Business Development Manager; and Jack Miller, Site Supervisor.
“As the company approaches its 50th birthday, we at CLS are extremely proud of our heritage. The experience accumulated over these years have provided us with a formidable reputation for delivering an exceptionally high-quality service. We endeavour to keep at the forefront of changes in technology, operational and construction techniques, and Health and Safety/Environmental legislation to ensure our reputation is maintained and exceeded.”
John Miller, Managing Director.
