Hockey Pitch and 3G Pitch Refurbishments

This project involved the refurbishment of both a full-sized hockey pitch and 3G pitch for Huntingdonshire District Council in Cambridgeshire at their St Ives Outdoor Centre.

Hockey Pitch Refurbishment

To refurbish the hockey pitch we firstly removed the existing synthetic turf to expose the existing shockpad. On removal it became evident that the shockpad was also at the end of its life and this was therefor also removed. The existing macadam layer was then checked for FIH compliance. Several areas were found to also be out of tolerance and were therefore clearly marked for removal and repair. the existing macadam was cut out and the base compacted before a new 40mm layer of 10 OGSC macadam was installed and compacted in a smooth uniform layer with the existing surface.

A new in-situ rubber shock pad was then installed onto the existing and repaired macadam base. This was made up of 2-6mm SBR rubber granulate mixed with a polyurethane binder. A new sand dressed synthetic carpet was then installed directly onto the new in-situ shock pad complete with associated sand infill material and line markings for both full-sized hockey and cross field hockey.

To complete the project the existing floodlighting system was also refurbished and new more efficient LED lamps were installed onto the existing columns.

The pitch was then tested and certified to FIH standards.

3G Pitch Refurbishment

The existing 3G pitch at the St Ives Leisure Centre site was also refurbished as the existing surface had come to the end of its life. We again, removed the existing synthetic turf, infill and shockpad to expose the macadam base. Several areas were then repaired to ensure FIFA standards could be achieved on the completed surface.

A new pre-fabricated shock pad was then installed, before the 3G synthetic carpet was laid. The associated sand and rubber infill  where then installed in uniform layers before the pitch was tested and certified to FIFA standards.
