St James Boys School

Bulk Earthworks, Drainage Installation, Natural Sports Pitch Construction, Irrigation

CLS Sports were appointed by St. James Boys School, Ashford to redevelop their ‘North Field’ area from a former landfill site into two natural sports pitches and a cricket square.

Key Elements of the Project:

  • Site clearance of vegetation and trees
  • Completion of the drainage installation which had been previously started 5 years ago by another contractor.
  • Importation of over 9,000m3 of topsoil
  • Irrigation system and tank installation which was comprised of several hydrant points to run several self-travelling sprinklers. Sand amelioration
  • Pre-seed fertiliser application and seeding
  • Cricket square construction
  • Initial maintenance works

As the site was a former landfill, many special considerations had to be taken into account. Due to the low level asbestos contamination no material was to be removed from site. A new clay cap was also required in one location to stop any contamination and a significant depth of subsoil and topsoil were imported to further bury the landfill. The site was also obstructed by the main aviation fuel line from Heathrow Airport which meant an exclusion zone also had to be set up.

To ensure minimum disruption to the school CLS Sports restricted the mass import of topsoil deliveries and access to outside school hours. Against all the challenges and restrictions CLS Sports delivered an outstanding finished project within 7-weeks.
