YARM SCHOOL

Hockey Pitch Construction, Boathouse Construction, Hard and Soft Landscaping

Located on an environmentally sensitive site next to the River Tees, historic Yarm School appointed CLS Sports as the main contractor to carry out major improvements to their sporting provision.

The project involved the construction of; a full sized synthetic hockey pitch, a modern boathouse and a new car parking provision. This adding to the MUGA and cricket training facility CLS Sports had previously constructed on the other side of the school grounds.

The brief was very challenging as planning permission, environmental constraints and limited space dictated many different elements that had to be considered.

As the pitch was also to be constructed on a significant incline. The full-size pitch construction involved a large amount of earthworks and a sheet pile retaining wall, as well as a 480m³ attenuation tank as the pitch extended onto a nearby floodplain. The sand dressed pitch was then installed upon an insitu shock pad on an engineered base. Full perimeter fencing and a bespoke floodlighting system was also included due to the varying external ground levels and close proximity of neighbouring properties.

At the bottom of the hockey pitch the futuristic cedar clad boathouse, which includes a cutting edge training facility, changing rooms and office, features a large cantilever structure overhanging the river. A new boat yard and slipway were also constructed at the bottom on the building. The Juliette balcony offers excellent riverside viewing for spectators, while a large platform on the other side presents a grandstand view of the new hockey pitch. Since construction the boathouse has won a Local Authority Building Control Award for The Best Educational Building in the North.

As well as the boathouse and hockey pitch construction CLS provided a major soft and hard landscaping scheme. This involved the removal of the old car park before a new one-way system and new entrance way were constructed. A sustainable drainage system was installed before the new resin-bonded car parking bays and macadam road were laid and paved pedestrian pathways were also installed along with amenity lighting. Many deciduous and evergreen trees were then planted, along with box hedging and turf laying.

"Yarm School have engaged the services of CLS Sports several times in recent years and has been consistently delighted with their work. I would not hesitate to use CLS Sports again, nor to recommend them to any interested party." David Dunn, Headmaster.
